Filmed over a 30 year period, this is the story of one of Britain's unusual forms of train traction. The DEMU was adopted by BR (SR) to eliminate steam trains and amongst the locations featured are the Ashford - Hastings line, the Uckfield line, Swanage branch, East Grinstead and the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

By the end of 2005 all slam door trains were due to have been withdrawn and this DVD serves as a fine tribute to this hardy stock, which includes archive footage. Amongst the types featured are the CEP, CIG, class 73, BIL, 4SUB, 4LAV and EPB. We also see their modern counterparts such as the class 375, 377, 444, 450, 458 and 460.

The original narrow-bodied Thumper DEMU No. 1001 visits the long-closed Dungeness branch before running to Ashford, Canterbury, Margate and Dover. On the way we view rare archive footage from 1966 featuring Appledore, Lydd Town, Greatstone Halt and New Romney stations just a year before closure. We also visit the depot where Hastings Diesels Ltd maintain their historic fleet.

A fascinating collection of films documenting both old and modern steam in Kent. Amongst the locations featured are Sandling Junction in the 1930s (showing the old Hythe branch train), Gravesend West branch (closed to passengers in 1953), KESR Headcorn extension (closed 1954), the Kent Colleries and East Kent Railway and boat trains up the steep Folkestone Harbour branch. Away from steam, we also see the much-loved Ramsgate Tunnel Electric Railway, which utilised the old LCDR Ramsgate Sands station tunnel.
