The end of a 3 year story as the Birdcage Coach is prepared finally for it’s first run. The pullman car Barbara now takes its place at the Robertsbridge end of the C&W shed. This is the period of the year when servicing of the passenger carrying fleet of coaches takes priority over anything else. Arriving at the C&W shed early on a Tuesday, I often see this view as serviced stock is removed and the next carriage is shunted into place in the shed ready for attention. As I sort through my photos and write these descriptions, I am
again amazed at the amount and quality of work that our Carriage
and Wagon Shed staff - the couple of paid ones plus the volunteers
achieve together. Could we do more and better work? Of course
more could be achieved if the few were helped by more volunteers.

The problem with editting this quarterly update is not in finding
material but reducing it to a couple of dozen or so photographs.
There are a number of regular volunteers helping the various projects

Today (as I write this) this ancient carriage, built 1898, entered
the works. Its early numbers can still be clearly read. How long
before it will be seen running again? These pages have been prepared
so that those who might not otherwise be able to peep behind the
scenes at the railway’s carriage and Wagon shed, can do
so. This month there are more pictures than ever as we open and
close another chapter in K&ESR’s ongoing history. Would
you like to help to make things happen faster and better? Would
you like to see 3062 (formerly a bungalow near Ashford and recovered
by the late Eric Graves and his group) turned once again into
a coach in our vintage fleet - or perhaps you have some other
favourite. Pick up a phone and give us a bell and we’ll
tell you how you can help. |

Travel broadens the mind they say. Having had an extended winter
holiday in southern sun, I have returned with fresh respect for
what is achieved on our comparatively tiny railway. Picture one
shows how some Australian railway enthusiasts carry out their
restoration projects - in a eucalyptus forest! My thanks to Robin
Dyce who has been snooping round the Carriage and Wagon sheds
with his camera for me during my absence and whose pictures these
are mainly. |

In the last update I referred to the 'Rags to Riches' dimension to the
work of the Carriage and Wagon Department - turning rotted and rusted
hulks into smoothly functioning and gleaming rolling stock. However the
priority of the department, as these first pictures demonstrate, is to
keep the operational fleet of carriages and wagons running and ready for
service. The volume of this work dictates the amount of time and resources
that can be devoted to the restoration side of the work. With the end
of the 2005 running season, the priority has turned to servicing the carriage
stock.

It’s a “from Rags to Riches” story or perhaps more
accurately rot and rust to riches story as historic items of our transport
history are restored to gleaming operational order. If you have an interest
in the past and are keen on helping, then these pictures are to whet your
appetite. They have been taken at the Carriage and wagon shed at Tenterden.
