Press Release - 11 February 2010

Gardens & Guards
at the Kent & East Sussex Railway

gardens_guards

'Gardens and Guards', an innovative collaboration between renowned tourist attractions Great Dixter House and Gardens and the Kent & East Sussex Railway proved very popular this year and will be made available again for visitors to enjoy in 2010.

'Gardens and Guards' comprises a tour of the stunning Great Dixter House and Gardens followed by a ride on a steam train ride through picturesque countryside, with a cream tea on board. The tour is available every railway operating day from April to September and costs just £22.25 pp for groups of fifteen or more.

The day begins at 11:30 am when coach parties arrive at Great Dixter for a private tour of the beautiful Medieval Manor House, one of the largest surviving timber framed halls in the country. After exploring the exquisite features of the house, visitors have the opportunity to wander round the superb renowned gardens, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and the home of the late Christopher Lloyd O.B.E., who devoted his lifetime to creating one of the most experimental, exciting and constantly changing gardens of our time. Visitors can admire the many planting displays, comprising varied themes and an assortment of rich colour. The gardens are a delight all year round, but considered by many to be stunning in April, May and September.

At 1.30pm groups depart Great Dixter, taking a short trip by coach to the nearby Kent & East Sussex Railway station at Northiam, to board the 1:45pm steam train to Bodiam which then returns to Tenterden just after 3.00pm. On board groups can relax with a delicious cream tea and take in the superb scenery of the Rother Valley and High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Groups can choose to arrange for coaches to collect them from Tenterden station at 3:05pm or return on the same train after a 25 minute turn-round to Northiam arriving at 4:05pm.

All bookings are subject to availability.
