Cavell Van Restoration Appeal We need to raise £35,000 to restore the van in time for the National Service of Remembrance on 11 November 2010. The ‘Cavell Van’, built in 1919, is important in the railway preservation movement for being the prototype of a class of vans used for mail and luggage on express passenger trains from the 1920s. DescriptionGrandparents WeekendGrandparents Travel for Free at the Kent & East Sussex RailwayChildren can treat their grandparent's to a nostalgic day out for FREE on the Kent & East Sussex Railway during a special grandparents' weekend on 17 and 18 April; when every child rover ticket purchased (costing £7.80) entitles a grandparent to travel for free.
The unlimited day travel tickets allow visitors to hop off the train and explore the many activities each destination has to offer such as the shops in Tenterden or the magnificent Bodiam Castle. Whether you are interested in heritage, shopping, nature, food or drink, there is something for everyone. There are five stations on the line but passengers are encouraged to board the trains at one of three main stations, Tenterden, Northiam or Bodiam. Tenterden and Northiam are situated on the A28 between Ashford and Hastings and both stations have spacious car parks which are free all day for visitors. Those who would prefer to start their day from Bodiam can park at the castle for £2; it's then a 5-minute level walk to the station. The Kent & East Sussex Railway has an extensive events programme, which offers entertaining days out and special offers for families, groups and pensioners throughout the year. Every ticket includes a return train ride from Tenterden station on one of the steam or diesel trains; which gently wind their way along the 10 ½ mile line through stunning Wealden countryside and the Rother Valley before terminating at Bodiam station. Today, the railway retains much of its historic beauty and everyone can enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and service of a bygone age.
