Cavell Van Restoration Appeal - Latest Progress Report - click here for more information

image

We need to raise £35,000 to restore the van in time for the National Service of Remembrance on 11 November 2010. The ‘Cavell Van’, built in 1919, is important in the railway preservation movement for being the prototype of a class of vans used for mail and luggage on express passenger trains from the 1920s.

Spring Walks - (25% off single fares) RailTrails

Combine a ramble with a nostalgic steam train ride with the Kent & East Sussex Railway

railtrails coverOn 24 and 25 April everyone can take advantage of the Kent & East Sussex Railway's special weekend spring promotion which combines a walk with a nostalgic steam train ride.

Launched at the Railway in 2008, Railtrails is a unique collection of stunning walks through secluded countryside surrounding Tenterden, Bodiam and Northiam stations.

Over the weekend, keen walkers can take advantage of a 25% discount on all single train fares along with a free copy of the glossy "Railtrails" guide book, featuring six different walks with maps. Those wishing not to walk can still purchase full price rover tickets and the usual train timetable will be operating over the weekend, details of this are on their website.

Walkers can choose to start or end their walk with a train ride and most of the trails are only accessible to walkers via the railway. Choose from linear walks, which begin at one station and terminate at another, or enjoy a circular walk which begins and ends at the same station.

The trails are suitable for experienced and novice walkers and range from 2 ½ miles through to a more challenging 6 mile walk. Each guide includes a map with details of the terrain with the length of time a walk is expected to take. There are also suggestions of where to find refreshments along the route.

Tenterden and Northiam are situated on the A28 between Ashford and Hastings and both stations have spacious car parks which are free all day for visitors. Those who would prefer to start their day from Bodiam can park at the castle for £2; it's then a 5-minute level walk to the station.

The 'Green' timetable operates this weekend. Departures from Tenterden are at 10:40s, 11:45d, 1:15s, 2:20d, 3:30s. d = diesel DMMU, s = steam service.
