They say railways run on tea and it’s fair to say Rolvenden Locomotive Works is no different.
No major investment at Rolvenden has happened in several decades. However, overhauls are becoming more in-depth and require specialist facilities, whilst tighter legislation has resulted in the need for higher standards of work, competence and facilities.
Standing still costs money but making improvements to the facilities requires a substantial investment. In the current economic climate, it is unlikely that the K&ESR can afford the capital expenditure at Rolvenden that is required, especially considering that the extension to Robertsbridge is on the horizon.
The Rolvenden Tea Fund aims to raise funds over the next five years to bring this needed investment to Rolvenden Locomotive Works and the surrounding areas. The Fund will raise ringfenced money that is available, crucially at short notice, for this sole purpose.
The Fund will be operated and maintained by the Rolvenden Tea Fund Committee, an independent team of staff and volunteers that will ensure funds are spent solely for the task of improving Rolvenden Locomotive Works and the surrounding areas.
We have an ambitious target to get 100 people to join the Rolvenden Tea Fund and donate £2 a week (£10 a month), less than the average cost of a cup of tea in a high street coffee shop, towards the development of Rolvenden over a five-year period. We understand that money is tight but we hope that by giving a small, regular amount, you can support this important work.
This target gives us circa-£10,000 per year. This will be bolstered by up to £10,000 per year in match funding by Rapido Trains UK.
Funds raised will be used to purchase and replace equipment within the works that ensure our skilled teams can work more efficiently, safely and accurately which will lead to a long-term benefit for our locomotive fleet and allow them to meet the commercial requirement of the railway.
This appeal will also minimise the financial strain caused by any sudden issues. Machinery often becomes available at good prices, but deals have to be made swiftly and require funds in place for an immediate purchase so that we don’t miss out. This is where your donation will be vital.
This appeal will also look for commercial sponsors and one-off donations to bolster the fund. If you work for or know of companies that may be interested in helping, please do get in touch.
In return everyone donating to the Rolvenden Tea Fund will receive an exclusive enamel badge. We know it’s not big - but it is a something to say thank you for your support. You will however get to see Rolvenden develop, building a better foundation for our locomotive fleet and commercial operations as we expand into the future.
