The railway was first awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge in June 2010.

This Experience was developed with the support of the South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL). The current National Curriculum for History states that children should learn about a significant turning point in British history such as the first railways which were developed in Victorian times.
The railway and museum facilities at Tenterden are ideal for helping children explore how railways grew.
The experience includes a return steam train journey from Tenterden to Northiam (approx. 75 minutes) in genuine Victorian carriages. Victorian entertainment can, at extra cost, be provided in the form of a Punch & Judy Show. Children undertake a visit to a Victorian Signalbox and a guided Treasure Hunt through the Colonel Stephens' Museum at Tenterden Station. This museum is dedicated to the life and work of Colonel Stephens, founder of the Kent and East Sussex Railway.
This is an Experience tailored to individual schools so please let us know in plenty of time should you wish to book it.

The 2017 cost of the Victorian Experience is £7.95 per child - £9.95 per adult. We offer free places to adults accompanying your school party: one free adult for every 6 children. Bookings for this Experience can be made by telephoning the Booking Office on 01580 765155.

This Experience was developed with the support of the South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL). The current National Curriculum for History states that children should learn about a significant turning point in British history post 1066. The Second World War is a history theme used by many KS2 teachers. The KE&SR Evacuation Experience brings an abundance of resources that link many areas of the primary curriculum. Using PHSE and History to support teaching and learning centred on World War 2 gives greater depth, making a strong connection with those who lived through the difficulties, problems and demands of this period.

As a Registered Educational Charity, The Kent and East Sussex Railway is a stimulating and worthwhile venue for an educational visit. Our projects have been developed in conjunction with South-East Grid for Learning and Kent County Council.

The railway was first awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge in June 2010. Read more about this award and our pledges.

The Railway is also delighted to have become a Member of the Children's University in July 2011 to expand its commitment to learning outside the classroom.

Many children have never had the opportunity to travel by train, and one of the purposes of such a visit would be to enable children to know at first-hand the unique historical experience of travelling on a steam train.

Linking closely with the requirements of the History National Curriculum, we offer an Evacuation Experience each May. This is a large event in which over 10,000 children and teachers have taken part over the years. Our education consultants offer a wide range of curriculum related activities and we keep the costs at an economic level for schools.
The railway also offers A Victorian Experience Day which again links with the History National Curriculum.

We can supply extra dimensions to these experiences at an affordable additional cost. We always offer special rates to educational establishments, please contact us on 01580 765155 or by email for information and to obtain a quote for your school using the K&ESR as a learning environment.
